Onam (01 Sep)

On the auspicious and festive occasion of Onam on 1st September, 2017, with immense pleasure I would like to extend my hearty greetings and good wishes to the people of Goa and in particular the Keralite Community in the State.

Onam is an age old cultural festival of the people of Kerala which occupies a unique place in the cultural landscape of our country and is celebrated with great pomp and grandeur. Onam is celebrated to mark the homecoming of the King Mahabali who is believed to be the greatest king ever in Kerala. It is believed that he visits his subjects once in a year and this occasion is called Onam which for Keralites all across the world is an auspicious occasion. This also is harvest season in Kerala. Thus, this festival is also celebrated as the harvest festival of Kerala where people gather and celebrate arrival of new crops.

It is a perfect occasion to mention that celebrations of our cultural festivals like Onam, by the participation of people irrespective of religious, regional and linguistic considerations, help in prompting social solidarity, cultural integration and national unity.

May this year’s Onam celebration bring renewed peace, enhanced happiness and prosperity to everyone.
